Technician and Adjuster Licensing and Renewals

This section helps you understand the requirements for the following licenses, and how to apply for or renew them.

1) Do I Need a Smog Check Technician's License?

A Smog Check Technician License is required to inspect, diagnose, adjust, repair, and certify the emissions control systems on vehicles subject to the Smog Check Program. Revised regulations established three classes of Smog Check Technician license.

2) Do I Need a Brake Adjuster or Lamp Adjuster License?

Licensed Adjusters may conduct inspections that are required for issuance of Brake or Lamp Certificates of Adjustment, and also certify that corrections have been made when an enforcement document has been issued for brake or lamp system defects.

These licenses are not required to perform general repairs on brake or lighting systems.

Remember: Whether you are an applicant, or are attempting to renew your current license, you must submit a new application, application fee, and you must pass the examination.

Remember: You may renew your license up to six months before the expiration date of the license.
