Guide To Becoming A Smog Check Station - Permits
Permits
To upgrade your facility with a BAR-97 EIS, you may need city, county and/or state permits.
Cal/EPA California Permit Assistance Centers
To help you apply for the permits needed to become a Smog Check II station, BAR is working with California Permit Assistance Centers to simplify and expedite the permitting process.
California Permit Assistance Centers offer technical assistance, regulatory information and general business assistance, as well as a place to file permit applications for many regional, county and state permits. Once you have received from the manufacturer the specifications of the BAR-97 EIS that best suits your needs, contact the office near you.
When contacting these offices, have on hand the following:
-
Address of current or proposed Smog Check II station
-
Facility information
-
Equipment installation specifications
Confirm with the Center that the permits cover all ordinances and include any local permits that may apply.

Clean Air is Everyone's Job!
Motorists throughout California count on repair industry professionals to keep their vehicles in good running condition-and that includes keeping emissions control equipment operating as it should. By performing Smog Checks as prescribed by DCA/BAR, you can reinforce your relationship with your customers, increasing the chance that they will refer your shop to friends and return for future service.
We all want to live and work in a healthy environment, and through the Smog Check II program, we can significantly cut the existing pollution from our air.
Its in everyone's best interests to test and repair vehicles-not just to pass Smog Check inspections, but to keep them running cleanly every day of the year. It's about more than making a profit. It's about doing your part to clean up California's air and reinforcing the level of professionalism of the repair industry as a whole.
